PGRO Open Day

by Julia Hall-Jones

Last Tuesday, 1st July 2014, Stockbridge Technology Centre hosted the PGRO Demonstration Day. This was a new single day event, replacing the traditional Vining Pea and Pulse Open Days at Thornhaugh.

The morning session was introduced by Roger Vickers of PGRO and then there were 10 Minute presentations to give updates on topics including the market for pulses, current varieties for pulses and vining peas, BruchidCast, disease, herbicide and other research projects.

Following these the field demonstration area was open in the afternoon and featured variety, herbicide and fungicide trials as well as an insect trap demonstration, a perennial field margin demo and a demo of critical phosphates in peas. The Precision farming demonstration shed opened for a guided tour and the STC LED for crops facility was also open for visitors.

Invited demonstrations took place and featured Glenside - Soil management, Tilso - Cultivation techniques, De Sangosse - Establishment nutrition and pre-harvest preparation, Dodman - Tenderometer & engineering services for the vining industry, and John Innes Centre - QDiPs and PCGin project updates. HDC were also present, lending their support in developing UK Horticulture.

All in all it was a very full and informative day and well worth attending.
