LSA CT Fellowship Scheme: the SMART HORT conference
The LSA CT Fellowship cohort all gathered at the AHDBSmart conference earlier this month. This was the first that the 6 Fellows have had the opportunity to network with each other. The Fellows who started their Fellowships in January 2019 are from a variety of sectors within the horticulture industry.
Our Fellows are: Charles Croft, APS produce, Lucille Gilpin, Ballytrone Nurseries, Daniel Meuldyk, James Coles & Sons Nurseries Ltd, Matt Boyns, JW European Ltd, Jason Daff, University of Cambridge and Libby Rowland, Vitacress Herbs.
AHDB launched their first SMARThort conference to bridge the gap between innovation and the horticulture industry. AHDB hosted the fellows at the event, and they were able to partake in the two conference hearing presentations on the robots and human working together, innovations in disease detection to soft robotics handling delicate crops.
“The conference reiterated the importance of technological support for our current labour force in the face of a changing political and global climate”
Libby Rowland, LSA CT Fellow, Vitacress Herbs.
“There is progress in the robotics and automation sector that will eventually benefit UK Horticulture. While the mechanical and electronic problems are relatively straightforward to solve, the underpinning artificial intelligence and deep learning still needs development to enable the technology to be used to full advantage”
Jason Daff, LSA CT Fellow, University of Cambridge
By showcasing the latest in innovations and future movements in technology our Fellows can take their learnings back to their work place and into their future roles within the wider industry.
The fellows are the first to be inducted into the scheme, the applications for the next cohort will open later in the year, please visit www.lsactfellowship.org for more details.
The scheme is being generously supported by the National Farmers Union, British Growers Association, The Horticultural Trades Association, the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board.
