It's Asparagus time

by Jayne Dyas

The suns shining as I’m typing this and, after the spring we have had, it is very welcome. It will also be very welcome on the 25th June for the Asparagus Agronomy day at Sandfields Farm, Kidderminster. With a record attendance booked in there is something for growers of all acreages to learn. Dr Peter Falloon from New Zealand is a world expert on the major asparagus diseases and decline. His extensive travelling around the leading asparagus countries gives him a first-hand account of the world market place which he will report on at this event.

UK asparagus consumer trends will be presented by Finlays Fresh Produce and the results of the British Asparagus PR Campaign 2015 will be summarised by Pam Lloyd.

During the afternoon there will be three workshops running – including a viewing of the new asparagus plantings at Woodhouse Farm, understanding soil structures and machinery demonstrations.

If you have not already registered please call the office and speak to myself or Julie Foyster on 01507 353789.

With just 6 days remaining to the official end of the 2015 British Asparagus Season we would encourage everyone to buy as much as possible in the last few days. Asparagus is a highly versatile vegetable that can be used in starters or main courses. There are loads of recipe ideas at www.british-asparagus.co.uk.

For the growers who have had an extremely busy time harvesting this year’s finest crop now is the time to take a day away from the farm and visit the Asparagus Agronomy Day on June 25th whatever the weather is like it will be a great, informative day!
