Defra 25 Year strategy

by Jack Ward

Last week Defra held one of its first meetings to look at a 25 year strategy for the industry. The strategy was a manifesto commitment and it is encouraging to see the Govt making good on its election promises. Initial discussions indicate that the strategy will have lots of familiar elements, technology, innovation, exports, new entrants, procurement, waste reduction and nutrition. For me one of the key aspects will be helping the fresh produce sector to remain competitive. Global competition is a given and not something which is going to go away any time soon. One of our big challenges is harnessing technology and innovation in such a way that it maintains UK produce and UK producers as the food and suppliers of choice for the UK consumer and further down the line for overseas consumers.
The strategy is due for publication in late 2015 after a series of pubic consultation meetings around the country.
