7.5% jump in the area of horticultural crops in the UK

by Jack Ward

The latest Defra stats have revealed a 7.5% increase in the area of horticultural crops in the UK. The main contributors are top fruit, strawberries, raspberries, carrots, onions and salad crops. The industry tends to be a bit sceptical of official areas but the data has come from somewhere and assuming it has a basis in fact, it is a welcome indication of the strength of the sector and the determination to increase the UK market share supplied by UK growers. Interestingly the increase in areas correlate with the British Growers research conducted earlier this year which indicated strong levels of confidence from growers in the future of the industry.
